Ferdinand Magellan (Portuguese: Fernão de Magalhães, Spanish: Fernando de Magallanes) (1480 – April 27, 1521) was a Portugueseexplorer.
Magellan is given credit for having given the Pacific Ocean its name.

He called it Mar Pacifico, which means "peaceful sea" in Portuguese.
He became the first European to sail the Pacific Ocean, and his crew was the first to sail around the world. Magellan's voyage is said to have proved that the Earth was round.
