    Cottrell was born on January 10, 1877, in Oakland, California, the son of Henry and Cynthia Cottrell.

    He graduated at the age of nineteen in 1896 with a B.S. in chemistry. He taught high school chemistry for four years and then traveled to Germany, where he earned a doctorate in physical chemistry at the University of Leipzig in 1902.
