However, after falling overboard from his yacht, he swims to an island and encounters the Cossack, General Zaroff, a fellow hunter.

To start with, the General is cordial to Rainsford, but over dinner he explains how the island is set up as a trap, and that he takes survivors captive and then hunts them for sport. He gives Rainsford the choice of being hunted or being turned over to Ivan, Zaroff's massive deaf-mute servant.
